When you’re ready to take it to the next level and really hone your culinary skills, you’ll want to make sure you follow these simple steps when you’re in a cooking class so that you’ll be able to make the best use of it.
1. Choose the right class.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when you’re going to invest in a cooking class is to choose the class that’s right for you. Before you enroll, figure out what you’d most like to learn to cook and what you’ll make the best use out of. Learning to bake breads and make cheeses are great skills but they may hardly ever be utilized. Learning to cook a certain type of food, such as Thai or Italian can be a good option, but you’ll want to make sure you choose a food that you enjoy. Select a class that features foods you like and lots of dishes that are quick to make so that you’ll use your skills often.
2. Come prepared.
Arriving at your class ready to learn is paramount to getting the most out of your cooking class. You’ll want to bring a notepad and a couple of pens or pencils with you so that you can take notes about the things you’ve learned. Don’t rely on your memory, even if you have a good one. If you take notes about the things you learn, more of the information will remain in your head. If you do forget what you’ve learned in class, you’ll also have your notes to go back over later.
3. Practice your new skills.
Once your class is over, the best thing you can do is practice the things you have learned at home. Try out your new recipes a few times within the next couple of months. You can always store extra food in the freezer if you don’t want to eat it all right away, but one of the best ways to learn to cook a new dish is to try it out a number of times.

Sometimes a cooking enterprise doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to. Don’t be too hard on yourself if your meal doesn’t come out exactly as planned. Don’t give up on a dish (or on cooking in general) because of one bad meal. In fact, it’s a good idea to try to make the failed dish again to see if you can do a better job with it.
