Got a little extra time, or extra creative energy? Or, alternatively, don’t got extra cash? You’d be surprised at the home décor items you can craft yourself.
Curtains for bookshelves
If your shelves tends to be less-than-presentable, you can either a) change your personality and go a little more Type-A, b) browbeat yourself into alphabetization, or c) craft a curtain and cover those bad boys up. Needless to say, the latter sounds like the most fun. Bonus: choose the fabric to match your existing décor. Or whatever weird mood you’re in.
Floor pillows
Floor pillows are great, just great. You can use them for game night, for a party when the guest numbers exceed the chairs, for meditation, for lounging by the fire. And when you’re done using them, just stack them all in a corner, or under the couch. They’re also suuuuuper easy to make. We’re not seeing a downside here.
Coffee table
You’d think that a piece as central as a coffee table would be difficult to craft. Not so. There are tons of ways to make your own, but at the most basic level, just find something—a piece of marble, an old door—that you’d like to use as a tabletop, and mount it on legs. Or slap a piece of glass over anything—Ottomans, steamer trunks, etc.
Soap dispenser
Mason jar crafts are all the rage. One of our favorite ideas? A Mason jar soap dispenser. It’s super easy, super cheap, and not super cliché—yet.
Place mats
Sure, place mats can look tacky, if you’re still using the same ones that your mom used in the 70s. But they can also be cute, cheerful, or classy. When you make your own, the look is up to you. They’re also an excellent way to show off a beautiful table with less risk to its finish.
