This recent revelation from Apartment Therapy: things you can get at a hardware store in order to divide a room in your apartment, and either save money by splitting rent or save your sanity by not having to look at your roommate all the time.
Apparently, you can make walls out of rope. This might be the best divider if a room has only one window, and sectioning it off might inspire Seasonal Affective Disorder or just normal gloominess.

2. Thin plywood
You can hang it from a ceiling, and, voila, a cheap wall. Or you can put it on wheels, but this seems harder.
3. Turnbuckles and wire
For hanging heavy fabric without anything breaking or falling down at an awkward time.
4. Drop cloth
Cheap, easily changed cloth. Kind of the lighter version of hanging a plywood wall.
5. Fencing supplies
Similar to the rope wall, you can use lots of different stuff normally meant for fencing to divide a space, especially if you don’t need a full-on, opaque wall.
