If you’re like me, the beginning of December can mean dread. How will I ever find something that my mother will actually use? Something my picky brother cannot criticize? And when will I have time to shop for such gifts? Well, dear reader, you may have noticed that we’re big fans of Etsy.com, and your holiday misery is our excuse to peruse the pages for the most interesting and useful presents we can find.
For the “Manly Man” with surprising aesthetic sense
These handmade soaps are back-to-basics but packaged so prettily. In other words, they’re sure to get used, but won’t look boring when the wrapping gets torn open. For the cowboy who picks his plaids carefully.
For the person more interested in their pet
Maybe you know someone who has 72 scarves, but whose beloved dog inexplicably has none. Or maybe you know a dog prone to coughing whose owner just won’t shell out for basic protective gear. Etsy has a million gifts for pets (we’ve written some up in the past), but this one is a slightly different take on the weird sweater that little short-haired dogs would apparently get feverish without.
For the friend who loves giving even more than receiving
For that person who cannot stop wrapping presents, who thinks that the stylishness of the package is paramount, these little tags are guaranteed to delight. Not included: an explanation the whole Santa deal to kids who are old enough to read tags and recognize their mother’s handwriting.
For the art lover
Made-to-order means that your favorite museum-goer needn’t be burdened with Van Gogh when she really prefers Matisse, thank you very much. Pick her favorite pic and order some fairly fab shoes. Also good for: the college who desperately needs to be clothed because he spends all his money on video games (this may be a stereotype, but I know one personally), but who will be embarrassed if you do the obvious and buy several packs of tee shirts.
For the slightly odd uncle
…or the budding hipster. Or, frankly, for the person who has absolutely everything and so who will be surprised only by raccoon bones. Yes, those are raccoon bones. We’ve been assured they’re well-cleaned.
